How it is calculated
Heat = area × heat demand
Energy to buy = heat ÷ efficiency
Cost = energy to buy × price per kWh
Notation
- heat demand
- kWh per m² a year
- efficiency
- as a fraction: 0.9 for a 90% boiler
Worked example
- 100 m², 150 kWh/m², gas boiler 90%, price 0.10 per kWh.
- Heat: 100 × 150 = 15,000 kWh.
- Energy to buy: 15,000 ÷ 0.9 = 16,667 kWh.
- Cost: 16,667 × 0.10 = 1,666.67 a year, or 238.10 a month over a 7-month season.
The price depends on three things: how much heat the building loses, how efficiently the system turns energy into heat and what you pay per kWh. Enter your own tariff: it varies too much by country and supplier for a meaningful default.
The insulation presets are rough guides, so treat the result as an estimate. If you have last year's consumption, enter your own figure for the most accurate answer.

How much does it cost to heat a 100 m² house?
With an average 150 kWh/m² a year, a 90% efficient gas boiler and gas at 0.10 per kWh, about 1,667 a year. The same home at 50 kWh/m² would cost about a third of that.
Is a heat pump cheaper than gas?
It needs far less energy, about a third of the heat it delivers at a seasonal factor of 3, but electricity usually costs more per kWh. Enter both tariffs in turn to compare them for your home.
What heat demand should I enter?
As a guide: about 50 kWh/m² a year for a new well-insulated home, 100 for a renovated one, 150 for an average one and 250 for an old uninsulated one. Your own bills are more accurate.
Why can efficiency be over 100%?
A heat pump moves heat from outside rather than creating it, so it delivers about 3 kWh of heat for 1 kWh of electricity. That is entered here as 300%.
Does this include hot water?
No. The estimate covers space heating only, so hot water, standing charges and maintenance are extra.
