This converter replaces every letter with its position in the alphabet — A = 1, B = 2, C = 3 and so on up to Z = 26 — and turns numbers back into letters. The substitution is known as the A1Z26 cipher, one of the simplest codes there is, and it shows up in escape rooms, geocaching puzzles, scavenger hunts, school worksheets and TV-show riddles. Type or paste your text, pick a separator, and the result updates as you type: "Hello World" becomes 8 5 12 12 15 / 23 15 18 12 4. Accented letters such as é or ç count as their base letter, and anything that is not a letter is skipped.
Besides the code itself, the tool adds up the values: the total for the whole text and a separate sum for every word. Word sums are used in puzzles and in simple letter-value games, and they are the first step of name numerology, which reduces such totals to a single digit (the name number calculators on this site use the 1–9 Pythagorean table instead). Tick "reverse order" for the Atbash-style variant where A = 26 and Z = 1. The alphabet menu also switches to the Russian and Ukrainian alphabets (33 letters each) and the 32-letter Lithuanian one, so Cyrillic and Baltic texts are numbered correctly.

What number is each letter of the alphabet?
A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=6, G=7, H=8, I=9, J=10, K=11, L=12, M=13, N=14, O=15, P=16, Q=17, R=18, S=19, T=20, U=21, V=22, W=23, X=24, Y=25, Z=26. The full table is shown under the converter.
What is the A1Z26 cipher?
It is a substitution code in which each letter is replaced by its position in the alphabet. It is not secure at all, which is exactly why it is popular in puzzles: anyone who notices that no number exceeds 26 can crack it.
How do I decode numbers into letters?
Switch to Numbers → Letters and paste the numbers separated by spaces, commas or dashes. Use a slash (/) between words. Numbers outside 1–26 are shown as a question mark.
How are accented letters handled?
For the Latin alphabet, accents are removed before numbering, so é, è and ê all count as E (5) and ç counts as C (3). Letters that are not part of the chosen alphabet are marked with a question mark.
What does the reverse order option do?
It numbers the alphabet backwards: Z = 1 and A = 26. Combined with converting back to letters, this gives the Atbash cipher, in which A swaps with Z, B with Y and so on.
How is the sum of letters calculated?
The value of every letter is added up. For example, HELLO = 8 + 5 + 12 + 12 + 15 = 52. When the text has several words, the converter also shows the sum of each word separately.
Is this the same as numerology?
Not quite. Pythagorean numerology uses a repeating 1–9 table (J = 1, S = 1) and then reduces the total to one digit. This converter uses the full 1–26 positions. For numerology, use the name number or destiny number calculators linked above.
Which alphabets are supported?
English / Latin (26 letters), Russian (33 letters including Ё), Ukrainian (33 letters including Ґ, Є, І and Ї) and Lithuanian (32 letters including Ą, Č, Ę, Ė, Į, Š, Ų, Ū and Ž).
Are numbers and punctuation converted?
No. Digits, spaces and punctuation are not letters, so they are skipped in Letters → Numbers mode. Spaces are used to split the text into words for the per-word sums.
Can I use it for escape room or geocaching puzzles?
Yes, that is one of its main uses. If the numbers go above 26, the code is probably something else — for example a keyboard or phone keypad cipher, or the Cyrillic alphabet, where the numbers go up to 33.
