Writing an amount in words is required on checks and common on invoices, contracts and receipts, because words are much harder to alter than digits: turning 100 into 1,000 takes one stroke of a pen, while "one hundred" cannot become "one thousand" unnoticed. This converter spells out any whole number up to 999,999,999,999 or any money amount with cents. The tool works in five languages and follows each language's own rules, not a word-for-word translation. Russian and Ukrainian change the form of the currency and of "thousand" after 1, 2–4 and 5+, and Ukrainian hryvnia is feminine. French adds -s to "vingt" and "cent" only when nothing follows them, keeps "mille" invariable and writes "un million d'euros". How do I write a check amount in words?
Write the dollars in words, then the cents, for example "One thousand two hundred fifty and 75/100 dollars" or "One thousand two hundred fifty dollars and seventy-five cents". Start at the far left of the line and draw a line through any empty space after the words so nothing can be added.
What if the words and the numbers on a check are different?
Under the Uniform Commercial Code (§ 3-114) the words prevail over the numbers. That is exactly why banks and accountants insist on the amount in words: it is the version that counts.
Do I write "and" in numbers like 120?
In American usage "and" is reserved for the decimal point on checks, so 120 is "one hundred twenty". British English usually says "one hundred and twenty". Both are correct in their own variety; this converter uses the American form.
Where do hyphens go in numbers written in words?
Hyphenate the compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine: twenty-one, forty-five, ninety-nine. Do not hyphenate hundreds, thousands or millions: two hundred thirty-four thousand.
What is the largest number I can convert?
Up to 999,999,999,999 — nine hundred ninety-nine billion and so on. That covers any realistic invoice or contract amount.
Which currency is used in Amount mode?
Each language uses its usual currency: US dollars for English, euros for French and Lithuanian, rubles for Russian and hryvnias for Ukrainian. In Number mode no currency is added.
How are cents written?
In English and French the cents are spelled out as well. In Russian, Ukrainian and Lithuanian documents the convention is to write the cents as two digits after the words, for example "…eurai 05 ct", and the converter follows it.
Can I use a comma as the decimal separator?
Yes. 1250,75 and 1,250.75 are both understood. If a value has both a comma and a dot, the right-most one is treated as the decimal separator. Spaces and apostrophes between thousands are ignored.
Does it handle negative numbers?
Yes, a leading minus sign adds "minus" in the chosen language. For money amounts on documents negative values are rare, but they are supported for completeness.
